Exploring the Henderson Bird Viewing Preserve with David Lindo
The Kowa team had the pleasure of meeting our new brand ambassador, David Lindo - also known as the Urban Birder - along with birding expert Alex Harper, for an unforgettable adventure at the Henderson Bird Viewing Preserve in Nevada. This unique urban oasis, just outside the bustling city of Las Vegas, proved to be a haven for birdwatching, education, and conservation.
Meet David Lindo: The Urban Birder
David Lindo is a globally recognized birdwatching expert, author, and speaker who has dedicated his career to promoting urban birding. Originally from the UK and now based in Spain, David’s mission is to inspire people to discover the beauty of birds in cities and towns around the world. Through his books, television appearances, and guided birding tours, he has encouraged thousands to take a fresh look at the wildlife around them - no matter where they live. As Kowa’ new brand ambassador, David brings his passion and expertise to an even wider audience, helping more people connect with nature through the power of optics.
Birding expert Alex Harper also joined us for the day. Through hands-on educational programs, guided tours, and community outreach, Alex helps visitors to the Henderson Bird Viewing Preserve understand the importance of wetland habitats and the role they play in bird migration.

An Oasis in the Desert
David Lindo is well known for his advocacy of urban birding, a concept that encourages people to appreciate birdlife in their cities and towns. He was thrilled to visit Henderson Bird Viewing Preserve, a site that perfectly embodies this philosophy. Located in the middle of the desert and surrounded by urban development, the preserve is a remarkable green space that attracts a diverse range of bird species and serves as a vital stopover for migratory birds.
“I’m so excited to be here in Nevada,” David shared. “I’m very close to a place called Las Vegas - yes, that Las Vegas - but right here at the Henderson Bird Viewing Preserve, we’re surrounded by nature. It’s an incredible contrast to the bright lights and sounds of the Strip.”

Education at the Preserve
The visit began with a tour of the preserve’s educational facilities, which include a classroom for visiting school groups. Alex Harper explained the importance of these programs. “Most of the kids who visit here will only get two hours with us ever in their lives. We have to make sure we give them the best two hours possible.” The educational sessions start with interactive lessons on bird adaptations, where students examine bird feet, beaks, and camouflage. “We engage them by asking simple questions like, ‘Why do some birds have webbed feet?’ or ‘Which bird here has big claws?’” Alex explained. The goal is to spark curiosity and help young people connect with nature in a hands-on way. The preserve also provides free admission and loaner binoculars, ensuring that anyone can return and continue their birdwatching journey.
Exploring the Wetlands
With their binoculars in hand, David and Alex ventured out into the preserve, eager to spot some of its incredible avian residents. The preserve’s nine ponds, which are fed by reclaimed water from the city, create a diverse wetland habitat that attracts birds of all kinds - from waders and waterfowl to songbirds and raptors.
As they walked the trails, Alex pointed out the significance of this wetland in the desert. “Migratory birds flying thousands of miles see this lush green space from high above and are naturally drawn to it. It’s like a beacon in an otherwise arid landscape.”
Their patience was soon rewarded with an exciting sighting - a Wilson’s snipe blending into the shallow waters near the cattails. “If you look slowly and move carefully, you can just spot it,” Alex guided. “It’s amazing how well-camouflaged they are.”
Unexpected Sightings and Birding Surprises
One of the most remarkable moments of the day came when they spotted an unexpected visitor - a long-tailed duck, a seabird rarely seen in Nevada. “What on earth is a long-tailed duck doing here in the middle of the desert?” David exclaimed. The mystery of how certain birds end up in unlikely places is part of what makes birdwatching so fascinating. “It might have taken a wrong turn while migrating,” Alex speculated. “But one thing is for sure - this place provides food, water, and shelter, making it a perfect stopover.” As they continued, David was delighted to see a Crissal thrasher for the first time in his life. Trying to contain his excitement, he admitted, “I’m actually holding back because I’m trying to be professional! But this is a new species for me - just incredible.”

The Magic of Birding
Throughout the day, David and Alex reflected on the deeper joys of birdwatching. “What I love about birding is that you never know what you’re going to see,” David said. “Even the most familiar birds can bring new surprises, and every encounter is special.”
Alex shared a touching story about how birdwatching had an unexpected impact on his own family. His mother, who had never been particularly interested in birds, one day sent him a message about a Eurasian collared dove on her balcony. After learning more about it, she became fascinated and started birding in her own neighborhood. “You never know who you’re going to inspire,” Alex reflected. “Sometimes, all it takes is a moment of connection.”
A Call to Explore Nature
Before wrapping up their visit, David had a message for those living in urban environments: “Give yourself just ten minutes a day to step away from your phone, your routine, and just look up. Find a patch of green or blue, block out the city sounds, and reconnect with nature. It’s easier than we think - it’s all out there waiting for us.” Nature is everywhere, even in the heart of a city. Kowa optics are designed to help people experience these moments of wonder, whether in the most remote wilderness or an urban birding hotspot. If you ever find yourself near Las Vegas, take a detour to Henderson Bird Viewing Preserve. You might just spot something extraordinary.
We are honored to have David Lindo as our brand ambassador, and we look forward to sharing more of his adventures as he continues to inspire people to look up and notice the birds around them!
